The Best Homemade Apple Sauce

Apple sauce may be one of the most stereotypical easy-to-chew foods. At my house, we go through a lot of apple sauce. My two year old eats an absurdly disproportionate amount of apple sauce. He sneaks into the garage where we keep it. We buy the apple sauce cups that have the tin foil lids that peel off. He doesn’t even peel the foil off, he just bites two holes in the top and sucks out the contents, like a vegetarian vampire. All we have to do is follow the grisly trail of his plastic victims to catch him in the act.

All that store bought apple sauce gets expensive, it also lacks a certain authenticity when it comes to apple flavor. This led us to try making apple sauce from scratch. It didn’t take long to convince us. It is easy to make and tastes SO much better than store bought apple sauce. Go buy some apples and give it a try, I think you will have a hard time going back to the store bought stuff!

    Equipment

    • Crock-Pot
    • Blender

    Ingredients

    • 3 Honeycrisp apples
    • 9 Fuji Apples
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • ½ cup frozen raspberries (optional but recommended)

    Instructions

    • Peel, core, and quarter the apples. Add the apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a crock-pot. Cook on low for 4 hours.
    • Add the cooked apples and frozen raspberries to a blender and blend until it is a smooth puree. Unless you have a huge blender, you will probably have to blend half the apples at a time.
    • Serve while hot or chill in the fridge if you prefer it served cold.

Apple sauce has long been a part of the B.R.A.T diet (Bananas, rice, apple sauce, and toast), which is a selection of foods that is recommended for people suffering from vomiting or diarrhea.

This makes the smoothest purees on planet earth!
